“The Revenant” won Best Motion Picture Sound Mixing at the Cinema Audio Society Awards on Saturday, upsetting the Oscar frontrunner for Best Sound Mixing, “Mad Max: Fury Road,” which had leading odds of 2/7 to prevail at this precursor prize. Also missing out at these kudos were “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” “Bridge of Spies” and “The Hateful Eight.” All of those films contend at the Oscars as well except “Hateful Eight”; the academy opted for “The Martian.”
The non-fiction/variety prize went to “Live from Lincoln Center: Danny Elfman’s Music from the Films of Tim Burton.” That special prevailed against “Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown,” “Deadliest Catch,” “Keith Richards: Under the Influence” and “Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck.”
The awards were presented on Feb. 20 at the Millennium Biltmore Hotel. The lifetime achievement honor was given to ADR mixer Doc Kane while Jay Roach will get the filmmaker award.
