Costume Designers Guild Awards: ‘Mad Max: Fury Road,’ ‘The Danish Girl’ …

Four of the five Oscar nominees for Best Costume Design were in contention at the guild awards on Tuesday; “The Revenant” was snubbed by the guild. 

Jenny Beavan‘s post-apocalyptic designs for “Mad Max: Fury Road”  won Best Fantasy Costume Design over Sandy Powellthe Oscar frontrunner for “Cinderella.” Beavan had already won at both the Critics’ Choice and BAFTAs. The other CDG nominees were “Ex Machina,” “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2” and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”

Powell also lost Best Period Costume Design for her Oscar-nominated work on “Carol” to another Academy Awards contender, Paco Delgado for “The Danish Girl.” The other nominees were “Brooklyn,” “Crimson Peak” and “Trumbo.” 

And “Beasts of No Nation” took Best Contemporary Costume Design over the favored “The Martian”  is tipped to take  as well as “Joy,” “Kingsman: The Secret Service,”  and “Youth.”

The 18th annual edition of these kudos took place at the Beverly Hilton on Feb. 23.
