‘Dancing with the Stars’: Terra Jole gives Laurie Hernandez a run for her money on ‘TV Night’

No one was eliminated at the end of the September 12 season premiere of “Dancing with the Stars,” so the contestants all had another chance to make an impression on viewers and judges before someone is sent home in Tuesday night’s results show. Did they make the most of that opportunity? And who will be eliminated on Tuesday night? Our “Dancing with the Stars” prediction center is back open so you can update your picks for Tuesday night’s ouster, as well as revise your predictions for our season-long question: who will win the Mirror Ball Trophy?

Gymnast Laurie Hernandez was the highest scoring dancer for the second week in a row, just like our odds predicted; based on the predictions of our contest entrants she had leading 4/11 odds to come out on top. This week the contestants performed dances inspired by famous TV theme songs, and Hernandez delivered a “DuckTales” themed jive with pro partner Val Chmerkovskiy that earned straight eights from the judges, giving her a total of 32, one point better than her high score in the season premiere episode.

But it was a close call. Second place was only one point behind her, and it wasn’t the contestant we might have expected. It was reality TV star Terra Jole, the first little person ever to compete on “Dancing with the Stars,” and now it looks like she’s a true contender. Her “Bewitched” quickstep with partner Sasha Farber scored eights from every judge except stingy Len Goodman, who gave her a seven, for a total of 31. When predicting this week’s high score our contest entrants only placed her eighth with 100/1 odds. In fact, we thought she had a much better chance of landing at the bottom, giving her 18/1 odds of getting the low score. It looks like we’ve been severely underestimating her.

Singer-songwriter Babyface also exceeded our expectations, scoring two sevens and two eights for a total of 30 for his “X-Files” Argentine tango with partner Allison Holker. As with Jole we had given him 100/1 odds of getting the high score, so the fact that he too came close to Hernandez’s total also came as a surprise.

Much less surprising, however, was the poor performance by former Texas governor Rick Perry, who was at the bottom of the leaderboard in week one and had overwhelming 2/7 odds to land at the bottom again. He did get the lowest score for the second week in a row, but if nothing else you could say his “Green Acres” quickstep was a step up — based on the judges’ scores at least. After getting fives across the board last week, this time Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli both bumped him up to a six, giving him a total of 22.

As for swimmer Ryan Lochte, who was accosted on stage by protesters after his performance in the season premiere, the “Dancing with the Stars” producers saved his dance for last, but the result wasn’t exactly a showstopper. His “Muppet Show” quickstep was on par with his week-one performance, giving him straight sixes again for a total of 24.
