Grammy-winning Boyz II Men singer Wanya Morris surprised our readers in the season premiere of “Dancing With the Stars” by receiving the top judges’ score, tied with model Nyle DiMarco and meteorologist Ginger Zee. As a result, our readers moved DiMarco to the top of their predictions to win the season. But in week two of the competition, DiMarco’s scores took a dip, while Morris once again topped the leaderboard. So why aren’t we predicting Morris as the frontrunner?
As of this writing, Morris ranks third in our predictions with 7/1 odds (13% chance of winning the Mirror Ball Trophy), behind UFC fighter Paige VanZant (3/1 odds, 25% chance), who tied Morris for the top score in week two, and DiMarco (3/2 odds, 40% chance), who remains out front despite this week’s shortfall. So why aren’t we ranking Morris higher? He’s the only star to top the leaderboard twice in a row.
One reason may be DiMarco’s inspirational story: he’s learning to dance with pro partner Peta Murgatroyd despite being completely deaf, so his timing and rhythm are even more impressive than the other contestants’. There’s also the fact that Morris’s heyday with Boyz II Men was back in the 1990s, so his fan base may not be as strong now as it was then. If that’s the case, he would need to top the leaderboard pretty much every week to avoid limited voter turnout from knocking him out of the competition prematurely.
But is his fan base really limited? He actually has a lot in common with Alfonso Ribeiro, who won season 19. They both trace their fame back to 1990s pop culture (Ribeiro co-starred in “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air”), both excelled early on in their seasons and both exhibit charismatic on-screen personalities – Morris’s dances haven’t just been technically impressive, they’ve also been fun.
Of course, it’s still early to try to make a decisive call, especially with so many celebs showing promise on the dance floor, including those already mentioned above as well as actress Jodie Sweetin and football players Von Miller and Antonio Brown. But after winning the first two weeks of competition, it might be time to take Morris more seriously.
So who do you think will win and lose? In our “Dancing with the Stars” predictions center, you get to answer the following questions before each episode airs on ABC every Monday at 5 p.m. PT / 8 p.m. ET.:
Who will win ‘Dancing with the Stars’?
Which star will be eliminated?
Who will receive the judges’ HIGHEST score?
Who will receive the judges’ LOWEST score?
How many 10s will the judges give out?
At the end of each week, the eligible user with the highest prediction accuracy and most points will be the leaderboard champ for the week, so it’s beneficial to keep coming back often and making/updating your predictions.
Remember that coming out on top doesn’t just mean answering that week’s questions correctly. You also have to use your three big bets (500 points and two of 200 points) strategically to score the most game points. If you bet on a longshot who pulls off an upset, you can really rack up the points, so don’t take them for granted.
