Was Nyle DiMarco‘s freestyle dance during the “Dancing with the Stars” finals really the best in the history of the show? That’s what judge Carrie Ann Inaba said on Monday night after DiMarco and his partner Peta Murgatroyd completed their routine. Watch their performance above, then vote in our poll at the bottom of this post.
For their freestyle DiMarco and Murgatroyd performed a contemporary dance to “The Sound of Silence.” Choreographed by Talia Favia, the dance was dedicated to the deaf community. DiMarco himself is completely deaf, but he has managed to deliver stellar performances all season without the benefit of hearing the music. In fact, most “DWTS” contestants with perfect hearing don’t have his level of musicality.
But despite getting a perfect score (30 out of 30) for that performance, DiMarco still landed at the bottom of the judges’ leaderboard for the night because his first dance, a quickstep, was a little out of sync. Does that take him out of the running completely for the Mirror Ball Trophy tonight, or will he prevail on the strength of fan voters? He may need to dominate the viewer vote to overtake Paige VanZant, who got the top score Monday night and is also the highest scorer of the season. But if any routine could put him over the top, it might be that freestyle.
