Hunter King (“The Young and the Restless“) has won Best Younger Actress at the Daytime Emmys for the last two years in a row. That’s not especially uncommon at these awards, but winning three consecutively is quite rare. Can she pull it off?
A three-peat has only ever been achieved by three actors, but two of them pulled it off in this category: Jennifer Finnigan (“The Bold and the Beautiful,” 2002-2004) and Jennifer Landon (“As the World Turns,” 2006-2008). The other was Chandler Massey (“Days of Our Lives,” 2012-2014) in the Younger Actor race.
To do it, King will have to overcome the largest field of pre-nominees at these awards: there are 14 actresses vying for nominations in this race, including three others from “Y&R.” One of those young women is also a past Emmy champ: Camryn Grimes, who prevailed for her role as Cassie Newman back in 2000, when she was 10-years-old. She earned four total nominations as Cassie, but now she’s hoping for her first bid as her new character, Mariah Copeland, whom she’s played since 2014.
The other two “Y&R” contenders are aiming for their first nominations. Kelli Goss played Courtney Sloane from 2013 until she was killed off in 2015. Alyvia Alyn Lind has played Faith Newman since 2011; the eight-year-old actress has never been an Emmy-nominee, but she was nominated for Best Movie/Mini Actress at the Critics’ Choice Awards earlier this year for “Dolly Parton’s Coat of Many Colors.”
“Days of Our Lives” has the most pre-nominations in this category with five actors cited. Of those, only one is a previous nominee: Camila Banus, who earned her first bid last year for playing Gabi Hernandez.
Joining her on the ballot are True OBrien, who played Paige Larson from 2014 until she was killed off in 2015, and Olivia Keegan, who assumed the role of Claire Brady in 2015. The last two “Days” contenders are pre-nominated for playing the same role. Ciara Brady was played by Lauren Boles from 2008 until 2015, when the character was aged and she was replaced by Vivian Jovanni.
“The Bold and the Beautiful” has three pre-nominees, all seeking their first bids. Ashlyn Pearce played Aly Forrester from 2013 until she was killed off last year. Reign Edwards joined “B&B” in 2015 as Nicole Avant. And Ashleigh Brewer has played Ivy Forrester since 2014.
“General Hospital” rounds out the category with two pre-nominees, though they’re not the two actresses who earned nominations for the show last year. Kristen Alderson and Haley Pullos earned bids in 2015, but this year’s hopefuls are Brooklyn Rae Silzer and Hayley Erin, neither of whom has been nominated before. Silzer played Emma Drake from 2011 until early 2016, while Erin took over Alderson’s role as Kiki Jerome in 2015.
Those who made the cut advanced to the blue ribbon screening round, which began February 22. That round of voting will determine the final nominees in each category, and also the winners. All nominations will be announced on Thursday, March 24 with the winners unveiled on Sunday, May 1.
