Drake took a page out of Beyonce‘s playbook by releasing a music film. “Please Forgive Me,” a companion to his 2016 hit album “Views,” was released on Apple Music on Monday morning, September 26. The 23-minute video was filmed over one week in South Africa and directed by Anthony Mandler, who has earned MTV Video Music Award nominations for helming videos for Common (“Testify,” 2006), Rihanna (“Take a Bow,” 2008) and Fun. (“Carry On,” 2013). Will it be as successful as Beyonce’s “Lemonade”?
The action-packed “Please Forgive Me” features multiple songs from Drake’s “Views,” including “One Dance,” “Controlla,” “Weston Road Flows,” “9,” “Views” and “Summer’s Over Interlude.” This could land Drake in the Grammy race for Best Music Film, where he would likely face “Lemonade” head-to-head.
If nothing else it could be a boon to “Views” on the charts. The album has already been a massive hit. Released on April 29, it spent nine straight weeks at the top of the Billboard 200 albums chart. This week the album is back at number-one for the 13th week overall. That’s a big milestone for Drake. “Views” has spent more weeks at number-one than any album since the “Frozen” soundtrack in 2014, and more than any album by a single artist since Adele‘s “21” in 2011 and 2012. On top of that, no album by a male artist has ruled the chart that many times since Billy Ray Cyrus was on top for 17 weeks in 1992 for “Some Gave All.” As of August, “Views” has sold more than 1.4 million.
Have you seen “Please Forgive Me” yet? Do you think it will continue Drake’s winning streak?
