In our two-part “Dancing with the Stars” past winners poll, we asked our readers to name the best female champion in the show’s history. From 12, they narrowed it down to a head-to-head between the show’s first-ever winner Kelly Monaco and the most recent female victor, Bindi Irwin (season 21). The result was a blow-out: Irwin was the choice of 70% of voters, compared to 30% for Monaco.
Wildlife conservationist Irwin was 17 years old when she won the Mirror Ball Trophy in November 2015. That made her the second youngest champion ever: she was just three days older than Shawn Johnson was when she won season eight in 2009. It was also the sixth victory for her pro partner Derek Hough, which extended his record as the most successful “DWTS” pro in the show’s history — no other pro has even won the show more than twice.
Though Monaco didn’t win our poll, she blazed a trail when she won the first season of the show back in the summer of 2005, but her victory wasn’t without some controversy. The contest between her and runner-up John O’Hurley was so close that “DWTS” staged a dance-off. O’Hurley won that unofficial rematch, though Monaco retained her title. And Monaco proved her mettle again when she returned for the all-star competition in season 15. She didn’t win that time around, but she did make the finals, outlasting a slew of other past “DWTS” champs.
What do you think of our poll results? Is Irwin really the greatest female champ in “Dancing with the Stars” history? If not, who would you have picked? Comment below, and join the discussion in our reality TV forum.
