“She’s almost modeled herself on a Bond girl in the sense she’s with this man who’s a billionaire and has this luxurious, glamorous life,” reveals actress Elizabeth Debicki as we chat (watch above) about her role in the new AMC limited series “The Night Manager.” Based on the acclaimed 1993 John le Carre novel, the six-part program is now airing in America coming off a hugely successful run on the BBC in the United Kingdom.
Debicki’s character, Jed Marshall, is the young American girlfriend of wealthy international arms dealer played by Hugh Laurie. Even though she appears to be the stereotype of this type of role, Debicki wanted to play her because she is really something different. She adds, “In actual fact, it’s completely at odds with the reality of who she is, where she comes from, the backstory, the decisions she’s made. I loved that duality in her.”
In addition to many scenes with Laurie, Debicki also has several with star Tom Hiddleston, who plays hotel night manager Jonathan Pine, a man now undercover in this arms dealing world. Of that character and relationship, she says, “Having an outsider in that Roper microcosm is very rare. I feel like he is one of the first people who walked into their lives for a long, long time. He’s fascinating from the get-go and completely unusual. They’re both very attuned to him and also the sense there is something off about the person he’s presenting.”
In her short career so far, the Australian actress has been in the films “The Great Gatsby,” “Macbeth,” “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.,” and “Everest.” She will next be seen in “The Tale,” “Breath,” and “Guardians of the Galaxy 2.”
