[WATCH] Gina Rodriguez (‘Jane the Virgin’): Balancing both camp and subtle comedy with drama

During our recent webcam chat (watch above), “Jane the Virgin” star Gina Rodriguez was philosophical about being snubbed by the Emmys after winning a Golden Globe and contending at both the TCA and Critics’ Choice awards. “Last year with the Emmys, everyone was saying ‘You’re going to get nominated’ and I wasn’t. And that was okay because people were talking about me having the ability to even be considered.”

She readily admits her attitude “after the Golden Globe win last year saying this is a beautiful accomplishment was I’m going to keep my head down and keep working hard and show that I’m deserving of such a recognition regardless of what happens next.” Her priority remains “whether I can fulfill all of (creator) Jennie Urman‘s fantasies, whether I can give her everything she wants. I definitely love trying.”

The actress is grateful for the action-packed plotting of season 2, in which her character became a mother and got married “not to mention all the fantasy sequences that I got to do: the salsa dancing, the rapping, the synchronized swimming.” She concedes her toughest challenge is “having to balance the complete camp comedy with my dad to the subtle comedy with some of the boys to drama with my love life.” For the sophomore season, Rodriguez has already contended again at the Globes and Critics’ Choice Awards.

She spoke to us on a break from filming “Annihilation” with Natalie Portman. “I’m here in London shooting a movie I’m in love with and I have moments where I can’t wait to go back to my family at ‘Jane’ and can’t wait to see what happens and I cannot wait to play Jane finding out that Michael [Brett Dier] got shot. What is that going to look like?”
