Amy Schumer (“Trainwreck“) and Jennifer Lawrence (“Joy“) are real-life friends and recent writing partners, but they’re both nominated for Best Comedy/Musical Actress at the Golden Globes this weekend. Lawrence already has two Globe victories, for “Silver Linings Playbook” (2012) and “American Hustle” (2013), but first-time nominee Schumer will have her turn in the winner’s circle according to our Experts.
Out of the 17 expert journalists we’ve polled from outlets including the Los Angeles Times, Rolling Stone and Entertainment Weekly, 11 of them predict Schumer will win, giving her 2/3 odds: Thelma Adams (Gold Derby), Edward Douglas (Weekend Warrior), Michael Hogan (Vanity Fair), Tariq Khan (Fox News), Jack Mathews (Gold Derby), Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby), Kevin Polowy (Yahoo), Paul Sheehan (Gold Derby), Sasha Stone (Awards Daily), Peter Travers (Rolling Stone) and Glenn Whipp (LA Times).
But Lawrence isn’t far behind. She ranks a close second with 19/10 odds based on support from six experts: Matt Atchity (Rotten Tomatoes), Michael Musto (Out.com), Christopher Rosen (Entertainment Weekly), Keith Simanton (IMDB) and Anne Thompson (Thompson on Hollywood).
Our Editors, the in-house staff who cover awards year-round for Gold Derby, also favor Schumer. Five out of six of us predict the breakout comedian will win. I’m the lone holdout forecasting a third Globe victory for Lawrence.
But our Top 24 Users, who had the highest scores predicting last year’s Globe winners, say Lawrence is still the frontrunner. Fifteen of them expect her to prevail, compared to just five backing Schumer. Two top users anticipate an upset by Lily Tomlin (“Grandma“), while one believes Maggie Smith (“The Lady in the Van“) will surprise.
More than 1,000 total Users are contributing their predictions, and they also give Lawrence the slight edge.
