It has been 39 years since Sylvester Stallone was last nominated for a Golden Globe. He contended for Best Drama Actor and Best Screenplay for the original “Rocky” (1976), losing to “Network” star Peter Finch and scribe Paddy Chayefsky. Now he’s back as an older and wiser Rocky Balboa in “Creed,” and he’s the frontrunner to win Best Film Supporting Actor according to our Experts.

Out of the 16 expert journalists we’ve polled from outlets including the Los Angeles Times, Rolling Stone and Entertainment Weekly, nine say Stallone will claim his first Globe, giving him 9/10 odds: Thelma Adams (Gold Derby) , Matt Atchity (Rotten Tomatoes), Edward Douglas (Weekend Warrior), Michael Hogan (Vanity Fair), Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby), Paul Sheehan (Gold Derby), Sasha Stone (Awards Daily), Peter Travers (Rolling Stone) and Susan Wloszczyna (

But he’s far from a lock. Another four experts predict Mark Rylance (“Bridge of Spies“), placing him second with 3/1 odds: Jack Mathews (Gold Derby), Michael Musto (, Kevin Polowy (Yahoo), and Anne Thompson (Thompson on Hollywood).

Idris Elba (“Beasts of No Nation“) is close behind them in third place with 11/2 odds based on the support of three experts: Tariq Khan (Fox News), Christopher Rosen (Entertainment Weekly) and Keith Simanton (IMDB).

No matter what happens in this race, Rylance and Elba have another chance to win on Sunday night. They compete against each other for Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actor for their roles in “Wolf Hall” and “Luther,” respectively.

Meanwhile, our Editors, the in-house staff who cover awards full-time for Gold Derby, agree that Stallone is the frontrunner, but we’re unanimous. All six of us agree that he’s the man to beat.

But our Top 24 Users, who had the highest scores predicting last year’s Globe winners, are more divided. 10 of them agree with the consensus that Stallone is the frontrunner, but another seven are predicting Rylance, six are betting on Elba, and one thinks Paul Dano (“Love and Mercy“) will surprise.

The more than 1,000 total Users contributing their predictions to Gold Derby are also split, though they too give Stallone a significant advantage.

Do you agree that Stallone will win this race? If not, which of his rivals could come from behind?
