The original film in the franchise, “Raiders of the Lost Ark” (1981), won four Oscars out of eight nominations, plus a special achievement award for its sound effects editing. “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” (1984) followed with a Best Visual Effects win and a Best Score nomination. The third film was also a winner, taking Best Sound Editing and earning additional noms for Best Sound Mixing and Best Score.

However, the franchise’s highly anticipated fourth film, “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull” (2008), was met with mixed reviews and didn’t receive any Oscar nominations. Will the fifth installment have better luck?

After all, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” “Mad Max: Fury Road” and “Creed” all proved that a long-running franchise can be revived into a major awards contender, and Spielberg is still an academy favorite, directing his 10th Best Picture nominatee just last year, “Bridge of Spies.” Do you think “Indiana Jones” is also due an awards comeback?
