John Boyega cast in ‘Pacific Rim 2’: Trading in lightsabers for giant robots

From one blockbuster franchise to another — it has been announced that John Boyega, who recently enjoyed breakthrough success with his leading role in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” will be jumping on-board another sci-fi sequel: “Pacific Rim 2.”

MTV Movie Awards 2016: ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ wins big, but wealth spread to ‘Deadpool,’ ‘Jurassic World’ & more

The first “Pacific Rim” film was directed by Guillermo Del Toro (“Pan’s Labyrinth”) and told the story of a war between humans and giant monsters known as Kaiju, who would do battle with colossal human-built robots. It starred Charlie Hunnam, Oscar-nominee Rinko Kikuchi (“Babel”) and Idris Elba.

Boyega is set to play the lead role as Elba’s son. Del Toro will not write or direct this second installment, but will remain on-board as a producer. Instead, directing duties go to Steven S. DeKnight, whose credits include TV’s “Daredevil,” “Dollhouse,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Angel.”

Boyega became an immediate fan favorite after the success of “Star Wars.” He won the Rising Star Award at last year’s BAFTAs and the Chopard Trophy for Male Revelation at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival. He also picked up a pair of MTV Movie Award nominations: Best Breakthrough Performance and Best Action Performance.
