One week after winning its first Emmy for Best Variety Talk Series, HBO’s “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” returned to the airwaves on Sunday, September 25, to size up the scandals of presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump before their first televised debate on September 26. The media has devoted much time to each, but have we gotten a true sense of their scale and scope? Not according to John Oliver. Watch his take above.
He explains, “This campaign has been dominated by scandals, but it is dangerous to think that there is an equal number on both sides. You can be irritated by some of Hillary’s — that is understandable — but you should then be f***ing outraged by Trump’s.”
Oliver goes into depth on Clinton’s controversies, including her well-publicized email and Clinton Foundation scandals. “The worst thing you can say is, they both look bad, but the harder you look the less you actually find,” says Oliver of the embattled Democratic nominee. “If you are struggling with the idea of voting for Hillary because of all this, you need to take a long, hard look at Trump … He’s quantifiably worse.”
Trump, as Oliver notes, has been found to lie 53% of the time by Politifact. In addition his self-named Trump University has been under fire for alleged fraud and he has used charitable funds from his Trump Foundation to settle lawsuits against his businesses and “to make an illegal political donation to support Florida AG Pam Bondi around the time she was considering investigating his not-a-university university.”
What did you think of Oliver’s latest episode? Is he well on his way to another Emmy win next year?
