Makeup & Hairstyling Guild Awards nominations: ‘Mad Max: Fury Road,’ ‘Brooklyn,’ ‘Cinderella,’ ‘The Danish Girl’ …

Only two of the seven semi-finalists for Best Makeup & Hairstyling at the Oscars — “Black Mass” and “Mad Max: Fury Road” — reaped bids with the guild, which announced nominations in five film categories and 11 TV races on Wednesday, the day before the Academy Awards do the same.

The guild snubbed the other five Oscar contenders for Best Makeup & Hairstyling: “Concussion,” “Legend,” “Mr. Holmes,” “The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared” and “The Revenant.”

“Mad Max: Fury Road” reaped a leading three bids, “Furious 7,” “Pitch Perfect 2,” “Ex Machina,” “Brooklyn,” “Carol,” “Cinderella” and “The Danish Girl” picked up two apiece.

Last year, “The Grand Budapest Hotel” won the awards for both period/character hairstyling and makeup before winning at the Oscars.  One of its two rivals at the Oscars — “Guardians of the Galaxy‘ — won both contemporary and special makeup (the other Oscar nominee, “Foxcatcher” contended in that latter category.) However, “Guardians” lost the contemporary hairstyling race to “Birdman.”

And in 2013, “Dallas Buyers Club” won the Period/Character Makeup prize here before prevailing at the Oscars. One of its rival Oscar nominees, “Bad Grandpa,” claimed the Special Makeup Effects prize while the third Oscar contender, “The Lone Ranger,” was shut out.
