Leonardo DiCaprio is a three-time MTV Movie Award winner, including Best Male Performance victories for “Titanic” (1998) and “The Aviator” (2005), but it’s safe to say he’s never shared an award with a CGI bear at any event. That could change this year: he’ll win Best Fight for getting mauled in “The Revenant” according to the predictions of our Top 24 Users, who had the highest scores predicting last year’s MTV Movie Award winners.
Out of the top users who have made their predictions so far, 16 say DiCaprio will prevail with his ursine opponent. However, he faces tough competition from a pair of human combatants: Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver for their light-saber battle in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” Ridley and Driver have never been nominated at the MTV Movie Awards before, but “Star Wars” may be a force to be reckoned with in every category thanks to its blockbuster success (more than $2 billion at the worldwide box office). Four top users are predicting Ridley and Driver.
The “Star Wars” franchise is also a proven winner in this category. Christopher Lee won in 2003 for battling Yoda in “Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones.” Two other “Star Wars” fights were also nominated: Liam Neeson and Ewan McGregor vs. Ray Park in “The Phantom Menace” (2000) and McGregor vs. Hayden Christensen for “Revenge of the Sith” (2006).
Our last top user is predicting Ryan Reynolds and villainous Ed Skrein for their battle in “Deadpool.” This is the first bid in this race for Skrein, but Reynolds was previously nominated for playing this character when he appeared in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” and battled Hugh Jackman and Liev Schreiber. “Deadpool” was an unexpected blockbuster hit when it was released in February, and Reynolds alone has five nominations this year for it, so we mustn’t rule them out.
Also nominated is another Marvel superhero battle, between Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man and Mark Ruffalo as an out-of-control Hulk in “Avengers: Age of Ultron.” Downey and Ruffalo previously won this category in 2013 along with their co-stars for their epic New York City battle against Tom Hiddleston in the first “Avengers” film.
Then there are Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy for their face-off in “Mad Max: Fury Road.” Hardy has been nominated for two previous filmic fights: against his on-screen brother Joel Edgerton in “Warrior” (2012) and then against the erstwhile Batman Christian Bale in “The Dark Knight Rises” (2013).
Rounding out the category are Melissa McCarthy and Nargis Fakhri for “Spy.” Other than “Deadpool,” this is the only comedy in the running, which may help it stand out. But a straight comedy hasn’t won this award since “Rush Hour 2” in 2002.
