The Oscar nominations will be announced this Thursday (January 14). The academy recently unveiled the nine films still in the running for the Best Foreign-Language Film at the Oscars, of which five nominees will be determined by a special committee who have been screening the semi-finalists.
The top five films we think will be nominated for Best Foreign-Language Film are below in order of their racetrack odds, with the predicted winner, “Son of Saul,” noted in gold. These official odds are derived from the predictions of 20 Expert film journalists along with the Gold Derby Editors who cover awards year-round, the Top 24 Users who got the top scores predicting last year’s Oscar nominations and the thousands of Users who make up the largest (and often savviest) bloc of predictors.
Our Experts, Editors, Top 24 Users and Users all agree on that lineup of five Best Foreign Film nominees.
When it comes to picking the winners, 16 of our 20 experts say “Son of Saul” will prevail: Thelma Adams (Gold Derby), Matt Atchity (Rotten Tomatoes), Edward Douglas (Weekend Warrior), Tim Gray (Variety), Matthew Jacobs (Huffington Post), Tariq Khan (Fox News), Scott Mantz (Access Hollywood), Jack Mathews (Gold Derby), Michael Musto (Out.com), Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby), Kevin Polowy (Yahoo), Christopher Rosen (Entertainment Weekly), Paul Sheehan (Gold Derby), Keith Simanton (IMDB), Sasha Stone (Awards Daily), Anne Thompson (Thompson on Hollywood), Peter Travers (Rolling Stone), Brian Tuitt (USA Today), Susan Wloszczyna (RogerEbert.com).
Pete Hammond (Deadline Hollywood) is the only Expert who predicts something else will win here, as he votes for “Mustang.”
All six editors say “Son of Saul” will triumph: Chris Beachum, Marcus James Dixon, Rob Licuria, Daniel Montgomery, Tom O’Neil and Paul Sheehan.
Also forecasting “Son of Saul” to win are 24 of our Top 24 Users, including Denton Davidson and Cinemateo21, who tied with the highest accuracy (79%) predicting last year’s nominations.
