oscar predictions best picture the revenant spotlight the big short 13579086“We are probably at our most befuddling point of any Oscar point in recent memory,” notes Gold Derby editor-in-chief Tom O’Neil about this year’s topsy-turvy Best Picture contest.

“I am vacillating more than some of the Republican voters!” harumphs Michael Musto (Out.com), one of Gold Derby’s top Oscarologists. “I was deadset on ‘Spotlight,’ then I switched to ‘The Revenant‘ when it won the Golden Globe, then I switched back to ‘Spotlight’ when it won the SAG, and now I’m back to ‘Revenant’ because it won the DGA.”

But what about the PGA winner “The Big Short,” which currently comes in second place in Gold Derby’s official rankings?

“I don’t feel ‘Big Short’ can go all the way because it didn’t even win Best Comedy at the Golden Globes,” reminds Michael. “However, Tom, guess what also didn’t win Best Comedy at the Golden Globes? [Last year’s Oscar winner] ‘Birdman‘!”

NOTE: In this podcast chat, Tom dismisses mention of the widely quoted rumor that “The Big Short” won Best Picture by only three votes at PGA. The guild disputes that claim, noting that their accountants do not reveal the vote tallies to anyone.
