Crazy Oscar suspense: Sasha Stone & Tom O’Neil on Best Picture mystery

What’s fun about dishing Oscars with Sasha Stone (Awards Daily) is that she’s as thoroughly obsessed with “the stats” as you and me – maybe even more so. She can tell you, for example, that no film has won Best Picture after failing to be nominated for Best Screenplay at both the Oscars and BAFTA. But yet she’s also savvy enough to add, “Maybe the film’s experience is so big and powerful – especially for men – that ‘The Revenant’ could override that.”

Her current prediction is “The Big Short” because it won at the producers’ guild, which has correctly predicted Best Picture for the past eight years in a row, but she notes, “The problem with ‘Big Short’ is it didn’t win SAG. I keep wondering: Why didn’t it win there? It should’ve won and it didn’t.”

As for “Spotlight,” she worries that it wasn’t nominated by the Visual Effects Society or for Best Director at BAFTA, but she concedes that it can still triumph because it’s “so emotional” and feels important.
