Jack Mathews’ Oscar predictions: Why I pick ‘The Revenant’ to win Best Picture

“I’m pretty confident that ‘Revenant’ has got it,” veteran Oscarologist Jack Mathews says about the Oscar Best Picture race in our podcast. He recently backed “Spotlight” because “I thought it was such an important movie — what it did and how well it did it,” he says. “I just didn’t think Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu was going to be able to come back two years in a row. The DGA was the real turning point for me.”

Jack makes a daredevil pick in the race for Best Supporting Actor: Mark Rylance (“Bridge of Spies”).

“Mark Rylance is a guy who pays his dues,” he says. “He’s been around a long time and I think he is amazing in ‘Bridge of Spies.'” Jack eschews the favorite, Sly Stallone, because he doubts that the majority of Oscar voters have seen “Creed” and “I just think they’re more likely to go for an actors’ actor than a movie star.”
