Of all the movie biopics nominated for Best Picture, only 15 went on to prevail on Oscar night. “Jackie,” which hopes to be next, would be the latest biopic to win since “12 Years a Slave” (2013) and the first since “Out of Africa” (1985) to tell a biographical story from the female perspective. Besides “12 Years a Slave,” other popular biopics to take home Oscar’s Best Picture trophy have included “A Beautiful Mind” (2001), “The Last Emperor” (1987), “Amadeus” (1984), “Gandhi” (1982) and “Patton” (1970). The first biopic to prevail was “The Great Ziegfeld” (1936), about the ups and downs of Florenz Ziegfeld, famed producer of extravagant stage revues.
According to Gold Derby’s experts derived from major media outlets, “Jackie” is expected to be nominated for eight Oscars: Best Actress (Natalie Portman), Best Original Screenplay, Best Film Editing, Best Cinematography, Best Costume Design, Best Production Design, Best Score and Best Makeup & Hairstyling. This would be Portman’s second Oscar victory after winning Best Actress for “Black Swan” (2010).
