Disney’s “Bridge of Spies” is the frontrunner to win Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars for scene-stealer Mark Rylance, but our experts drawn from major media outlets think that’s just the beginning of this film’s accolades. These 24 Hollywood insiders who cover the Oscar beat year-round predict that Steven Spielberg‘s Cold War-era spy thriller will earn at least five nominations overall including Best Picture. Scroll down to see the film’s racetrack odds for each of its likely Oscar bids.
“Bridge of Spies” is in ninth place to win Best Picture according to our Oscar experts. They give it odds of 18/1, way ahead of 10th place contender “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” (40/1 odds). Their #1 pick to win the top prize is still “Spotlight,” which enjoys leading 9/2 odds and has the support of 22 out of 24 experts.
Best Supporting Actor
After receiving nominations from all three major precursors — Golden Globes, Critics’ Choice and SAG Awards — Rylance shot to the top of our experts’ Best Supporting Actor chart with 3/1 odds. He currently has the backing of eight experts in this tough race, just ahead of closest rival Sylvester Stallone (“Creed”) who has five experts predicting him to win. See right-hand chart.
Best Original Screenplay
The original script by Matt Charman and Ethan & Joel Coen is in fourth place (10/1 odds) according to our experts. The three screenplays that “Bridge of Spies” must watch out for are “Spotlight” (17/10 odds), “Inside Out” (9/2 odds) and “The Hateful Eight” (6/1 odds).
Best Production Design
Production designer Adam Stockhausen is the defending Oscar champ for last year’s “The Grand Budapest Hotel.” Our experts give him 7/1 odds to repeat for “Bridge of Spies,” good enough for third place behind both “Mad Max: Fury Road” (11/5 odds) and “Carol” (5/1 odds).
Composer Thomas Newman is well-known in the Oscar history books for having been nominated a whopping 12 times without a single win. Will “Bridge of Spies” be his ticket to the Oscar podium? Our experts place the film’s musical score in fifth place (10/1 odds), behind “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” (13/5 odds), “The Hateful Eight” (4/1 odds), “Carol” (6/1 odds) and “Inside Out” (13/2 odds).
On the Bubble
“Bridge of Spies” has competitive odds in two additional categories, though it just misses out of our experts’ Top 5 for both. It comes in sixth place for Best Cinematography (14/1 odds) and seventh place for Best Film Editing (25/1 odds). And Spielberg and lead actor Tom Hanks also shouldn’t be discounted as they are both academy favorites.
