“Idris Elba is an amazing actor who got nominated by SAG, Globes, Indie Spirits and BAFTA and would be a worthy winner in any year,” says veteran entertainment journalist and Gold Derby contributor Wayman Wong about the “Beasts of No Nation” supporting actor. “But if his fellow actors really want to make a statement about #OscarsSoWhite, they could give him the SAG Award for Supporting Actor.”
Over the past week, while some big names considered participating in an Oscar boycott, Elba made a constructive, powerful speech at the British Parliament, saying, “I’m not here to talk about black people; I’m here to talk about diversity. Diversity in the modern world is more than just skin colour – it’s gender, age, disability, sexual orientation, social background, and – most important of all, as far as I’m concerned – diversity of thought.”
At the Screen Actors Guild, Elba faces off against Mark Rylance (“Bridge of Spies”), Christian Bale (“The Big Short”), Jacob Tremblay (“Room”) and Michael Shannon (“99 Homes”). It’s worth noting that Gold Derby’s Oscar frontrunner for Best Supporting Actor — Sylvester Stallone (“Creed”) — was snubbed by SAG, meaning this race is wide-open.

JackO: It’s very possible. I don’t know how many are waiting till after PGA, but considering how omnipresent the controversy was, I wouldn’t count him out.
AwardsConnect: Just a month or so back, I actually thought Elba was well-positioned to prevail here, given the surprise/curious Ensemble nod for “Beasts of No Nation” and his respect in the acting community, both on the film and television ends. Alas, Elba seemed to peter out toward the end of precursors season and the lack of Oscar nod pretty much ensures he can’t triumph here.
LonePirate: I’m guessing most of the voting had been completed before this controversy erupted so it won’t benefit Elba at all.
surpriselover: Yes, it will help for “Luther” but I don’t think it will help for “Beast of No Nation”. IF that did happen though it would pretty much eliminate Rylance and Bale from any chance of winning the Oscar.
