Cumberbatch had made appearances in British films like “Atonement” (2007) and “The Other Boleyn Girl” (2008), but then he had a huge career breakthrough thanks to “Sherlock,” the modern update of the classic Sherlock Holmes detective stories which has run off-and-on since 2010. For that role he earned three Emmy nominations for Best Movie/Mini Actor, winning in 2014. He was also nominated for a Golden Globe and SAG Award for that performance.
