‘Popstar’: Will Andy Samberg be first Oscar winner among ‘SNL’ alumni?

Oscar-winner Andy Samberg? It’s possible. His new film “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping,” which opens June 3, is a parody of music heartthrobs and features new music by his comedy group the Lonely Island. And our forum posters are debating whether he could win Best Original Song for one those merry tunes. A victory would make him the first ex-“Saturday Night Live” cast member to take home an Oscar. ‘Me Before You’: Emilia Clarke’s secret Emmy edge for ‘Game of Thrones’

Amanda: Keep in mind the Emmys have already awarded one of Lonely Island’s songs “Dick In a Box” (2007). Samberbg, Schaffer, & Taccone are not unknown to the academy performing “Everything is Awesome” from “The Lego Movie” (2014). Also the academy has embraced parody songs in the past when Trey Parker and Matt Stone were nominated for “Blame Canada” for “South Park: Bigger Longer and Uncut” (1999).

Boidiva02: It depends on how the movie is received by critics and the audience. But I’m doubtful this will happen. I’m betting still that Tina Fey will eventually win an Oscar. Or more likely, Bill Murray will eventually win an Oscar.

[POLL] ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows’: More Razzies for Megan Fox and friends?

OnTheAisle: I doubt Samberg will pick up an Oscar next year for Best Song. The implication of the argument is that Best Song is not quite competitive, an easy win. [Eight-time nominee] Diane Warren would certainly beg to differ. A name does not guarantee victory. Look at multiple nominees Sting and Dolly Parton who can’t seem to get on stage.
