“I really hope ‘The Big Short‘ can continue its hot streak with the DGA and the Oscars,” says Joshua Akin (screen name Josh A), Gold Derby’s top scorer predicting the 2015 Producers Guild Awards nominations. (See the full contest leaderboard right here.) Besides “The Big Short,” the other nine nominees are “Bridge of Spies,” “Brooklyn,” “Ex Machina,” “Mad Max: Fury Road,” “The Martian,” “The Revenant,” “Sicario,” “Spotlight” and “Straight Outta Compton.”
Akin actually ties with Gold Derby executive editor Paul Sheehan for the top score of 85% accuracy, but he edges him out with a higher point total of 3,216 by locking in better odds. Since he is eligible, as per our contest rules, Akin wins our prize of a $100 Amazon gift certificate.
This reader hails from New York City where he’s an actor/filmmaker who works as a recruiter. He tells us, “I’ve been visiting Gold Derby for a little over a year now. As far as how I went about making my PGA predictions, I tried to think like a producer by asking which films were the most profitable. As for the nominations, I’m delighted underdogs like ‘Sicario’ and ‘Ex Machina’ are getting some love.”
Akin correctly predicted 16 correct nominations across three categories, including eight of the 10 nominees for Best Picture. The two he got wrong were “Ex Machina” and “Sicario,” as he favored “Creed” and “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” instead.
For Best Animated Feature, Akin correct predicted all five nominees correctly: “Inside Out,” “Anomalisa,” “The Good Dinosaur,” “The Peanuts Movie” and “Minions.”
And for Best TV Movie/Limited Series, Akin forecasted three out of five correct nominations: “Fargo,” “American Crime” and “American Horror Story: Hotel.” The two he got wrong were “A Very Murray Christmas” and “True Detective,” as he predicted “Show Me a Hero,” “Wolf Hall” and “Bessie” instead.
