Some wondered if Eddie Redmayne‘s villainous performance in the critically drubbed sci-fi film “Jupiter Ascending” last February would derail his Best Actor Oscar campaign for “The Theory of Everything.” But the academy didn’t hold it against him then or now: he won last year’s Oscar contest and is nominated again this year for “The Danish Girl.”
However, Redmayne is now the frontrunner to win the Razzie for Worst Supporting Actor according to the combined predictions of Expert film journalists we’ve polled, Editors who cover awards year-round for Gold Derby, the Top 24 Users who got the highest scores predicting last year’s Razzie winners and hundreds of total Users who make up our largest and often savviest bloc of predictors.
Six our of our seven experts predicting the Razzies are betting on Redmayne, giving him 1/4 odds: Matt Atchity (Rotten Tomatoes), Edward Douglas (Weekend Warrior), Tariq Khan (Fox News), Tom O’Neil (Gold Derby), Paul Sheehan (Gold Derby) and Peter Travers (Rolling Stone).
Our last expert, Adnan Virk (ESPN), expects the award to go to Kevin James for “Pixels,” giving him 11/2 odds. James is also nominated for Worst Actor for his performance in “Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2.” He previously contended for Worst Supporting Actor for “I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry” in 2007.
There is a similar split among our editors. Five out of six of us predict Redmayne: Chris Beachum, Rob Licuria, O’Neil, Sheehan and myself. The last editor, Marcus Dixon, is betting on James.
Our Top 24 Users are even more divided than that. While 16 of them are forecasting Redmayne, four say James and two are going out on a limb for Chevy Chase (“Hot Tub Time Machine 2” and “Vacation”).
But if Redmayne does win, he would be in good company. Lots of prestigious actors have won both Oscar and Razzie, not the least of which are Al Pacino, Marlon Brando and Charlton Heston. Sandra Bullock even won both in the same year (Razzie for “All About Steve,” Oscar for “The Blind Side” in 2009). A string of Razzie contenders didn’t stop Ben Affleck from winning a Best Picture Oscar for “Argo,” and Worst Actor of the Century Sylvester Stallone is very likely on his way to his first Oscar win this year for “Creed.”
