Nineteen artists are vying for the five slots open in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Of these nine are first-time nominees while the other 10 have contended before but failed to make the final cut as decided by 800 music industry professionals. In two separate polls of the rookies and the veterans, we asked you for your picks for the most worthy of induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Among the rookie nominees, your overwhelmingly favorites were: Journey (30%), Pearl Jam (25%), Electric Light Orchestra (16%), Depeche Mode (9%) and Tupac Shakur (6%). None of the other four freshman nominees — Joan Baez, Bad Brains, Jane’s Addiction and Steppenwolf — broke the five percent barrier.
Of the 10 returning contenders, your top five were: Janet Jackson (25%), The Cars (23%), Yes (16%), J. Geils Band (12%) and Chaka Khan (10%). Of these, Jackson, The Cars and Khan each has been nominated once before, the J. Geils Band is on bid #4 and Yes is back for a third try. The other repeat nominees are sophomore contenders MC5 and The Zombies, 10-time also-ran Chic, Joe Tex who is now at nomination #5, and Kraftwerk who return for a fourth time.
Of our top 10 nominees, who are you rooting for to finally make the cut? Vote in our poll at the bottom of this post. (And be sure to vote in our survey of your favorite among the returning contenders.)
The official results will be announced in December with the induction ceremony to take place next April at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. An edited edition of that music-filled evening will air later on HBO.
