Is the wait finally over for Janet Jackson fans hoping to see her inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? Despite being eligible in 2007 (i.e, 25 years after her first record was released), she did not even reap a nomination till last year and then failed to make the final five. Jackson is among the 19 nominees this year hoping to win over the group of 800 leading lights in the music biz who decide on the inductees. The public can have their say via the online “fan ballot.”
Besides Jackson, the other sophomore contenders are the 80s New Wave band The Cars, queen of funk Chaka Khan, rockers MC5 and the Brit band The Zombies. Disco group Chic is in the running for the 11th time, singer/songwriter Joe Tex is now at nomination #5, the groups J. Geils Band and Kraftwerk are back for the fourth year and Yes is hoping that third time is the charm.
Of these 10 returning acts, who are you rooting for to finally make the cut? Vote in our poll at the bottom of this post. (Coming up soon: our survey of your favorite among the nine first-time contenders.)
The official results will be announced in December with the induction ceremony to take place next April at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. An edited edition of that music-filled evening will air later on HBO.
