Paramount Pictures has released a new trailer for “Star Trek Beyond,” which opens July 22. The trailer features “Sledgehammer,” a new track by Grammy-winner Rihanna written by Rihanna as well as Grammy-nominees Sia and Jesse Shatkin, so could it possibly be their ticket to Oscar? Watch the trailer above and decide for yourself.
“Star Trek Beyond” is the third film in the revived “Star Trek” franchise, which director J.J. Abrams reintroduced in 2009. That 2009 “Star Trek” won an Oscar for Best Makeup and earned additional nominations for Best Sound Mixing, Best Sound Editing and Best Visual Effects. Abrams’s 2013 follow-up, “Star Trek Into Darkness,” was also an Oscar-nominee, contending for Best Visual Effects (it lost to “Gravity”).
Abrams remains as a producer of “Beyond,” but this time he handed the directing reins to Justin Lin, who previously helmed four films in the “Fast and the Furious” franchise — most recently “Fast & Furious 6.” The screenplay is written by Doug Jung and Simon Pegg, who also co-stars as engineer Scotty. Pegg has lots of previous experience as a writer as well as an actor; he also scripted and starred in “Shaun of the Dead” (2004), “Hot Fuzz” (2007) and “The World’s End” (2013), among other comedies, but this is his first time scripting this franchise.
