“Supergirl” returns on Monday night, October 10, for its second season, but this time on the CW network instead of on CBS where it aired for its first season. But the show has made a smooth transition if the reviews are any indication, thanks in no small part to the first-ever team-up between the title character (Melissa Benoist) and her equally heroic cousin Superman (Tyler Hoechlin).
The critics especially admire the lighter touch of this version of the Man of Steel, compared to the darker, brooding version played by Henry Cavill in the recent big-budget films directed by Zack Snyder. What do you think of Hoechlin stepping into the famous role? Check out some of the reviews below, and discuss the season premiere in our forums.
Matt Webb Mitovich (TV Line): “If you happen to be here for the Superman of it all, the premiere won’t disappoint. Kal-El is introduced early on, pitching in on a big save, and then sticks around to fluster most everyone, from a purring Cat Grant to fanboy Winn … Here at the TVLine office, we’re divided into two camps: one that thinks Tyler Hoechlin is better as Clark than Supes, or vice versa. Regardless, he’s a solid TV Superman.”
Shirley Yi (Entertainment Weekly): “Good thing cousin Superman (a dashing Tyler Hoechlin) swoops in to carry some of the burden — and to add another welcome dose of charm to the most joyful superhero drama on TV. Hoechlin nails the bespectacled, gawky side of Clark Kent, and if he doesn’t seem quite as intense as other on-screen Supermen, the Teen Wolf alum hits the right, big-brotherly vibe with Benoist.”
Merrill Barr (Forbes): “This Superman is the light-hearted, bright eyed counterweight to the Zack Snyder version we have all be hoping for. He slides perfectly into the world of ‘Supergirl,’ acting as a great role-model for Kara as she continues her growth as the hero National City needs … Beginning with what everyone wants to know: yes, Tyler Hoechlin Superman is pitch perfect.”
