Like “Game of Thrones,” the reality series “Survivor” is a supreme battle of alliances, backstabbing and social politics. In both games you either win or die (get voted out), with the castaways on “Survivor: Millennials vs. Gen X” not fighting for the iron throne but the title of “Sole Survivor.” So, for this episode of “Game of Survivor” I will be connecting a “Game of Thrones” character with one of the castaways and this week’s “Your Job is Recon” episode saw Gen X castaway Paul Wachter get blindsided (listen to his exit interview podcast) and become the King Robert Baratheon (Mark Addy) of Fiji.
Robert started “Game of Thrones” as the most powerful man in Westeros, ruling from the iron throne. Similarly, Paul started out this season of “Survivor” reigning over the Gen X tribe as their leader. Both were old school men’s men. But both also grew into a complacency that meant they were not long for their respective games.
For King Robert, he was the victim of his marital alliance with Cercei Lannister (Lena Heady) who was worried he might turn against her when discovering scandalous news. She ordered her cousin to get the King drunk on a hunt, resulting in his death.
For King Paul, he was the victim of his alliance with Jessica Lewis who was worried Paul might turn against the women in the tribe. She got the other women to vote with her and three people Paul had excluded from the alliance to blindside their leader from the game in a 6-3 vote.
Both men show how perilous it can be taking on a leadership in the “Game of Thrones” or “Survivor.” While things have not proven to turn out well for those who followed in Robert’s footsteps, it will be interesting to see the fate of the person who now fills the leadership vacuum on Gen X beach.
