Fans have a painful wait for the return of the treachery and triumphs in the battle for the iron throne of Westeros. Emmy champ “Game of Thrones” won’t return until mid 2017 due to an epic production schedule. In the meantime, TV audiences have a new “Game of ‘Survivor'” into which to sink their teeth. Like “Game of Thrones,” the reality stalwart is a supreme battle of alliances, backstabbing and social politics. In both games you either win or die (get voted out); with the castaways on “Survivor: Millenials vs. Gen X” not fighting for the iron throne but the title of ‘Sole Survivor.’
“Survivor” has just started season 33, this time pitting a tribe of ‘Millennials’ against a tribe of ‘Gen X’ers. Last week’s episode was titled ‘Love Googles’ and saw professional video game player Mari Takahashi blindsided from the game.
The show has consistently over the past 16 years been telling stories as dramatic and complex as some of TV’s best scripted fare. So, for each “Survivor” episode this season I will be connecting a “Game of Thrones” character with one of the castaways; and ‘Love Goggles’ saw Millennial castaway Michelle Schubert become the Margaery Tyrell (Natalie Dormer) of Fiji.
In “Game of Thrones” Margaery had to deal with a brother in a scandalous relationship, a clueless father, and being outnumbered by Lannisters. On “Survivor” we saw Michelle in a similarly perilous position. In her alliance of four, Taylor and Figgy had started an affair, brewing controversy and unwanted attention. With the couple becoming a big target, the other six tribe members decided to set their votes on Figgy. This led to Michelle’s clueless alliance member Jay even getting on board. However, Michelle wasn’t so resigned.
In “Game of Thrones,” Margaery was able to use her skills of social persuasion to get the High Sparrow and young King Tommen to help spare her brother and stay in power. Similarily Michelle was able to use her social game to convince Michaela if she voted for Figgy she’d be next. She then persuaded high school student Will to get on board. Then in Michelle’s most artful move she was able to convince Hannah at tribal council to vote against her ally Mari, without giving a single reason.
In one episode Michelle was able to turn a 7-3 vote against her alliance into a 7-3 vote in her favor: maintaining control and saving one of her closest allies. In “Game of Thrones’” sixth season Margaery’s game met an untimely and explosive end. Will Michelle run up against someone as skilled and vindictive as Cersei Lannister in her game of ‘Survivor?’ Until she does, she remains the contender on the island who has shown the most impressive moves and is the player to beat.
