[WATCH] ‘The Affair’ season 3 trailer: ‘You think you know everything, but you don’t’

“I know you think you know everything, but you don’t,” says Maura Tierney as Helen Solloway in the new teaser trailer for “The Affair,” which Showtime released online on October 7 (watch above). Helen is talking to her rebellious teenage daughter Whitney (Julia Goldani Telles) in that scene, but she could just as easily be talking to us viewers, who often find ourselves with the rug pulled out from under us.

Season two left us — and its characters — in limbo: we learned that Helen committed a hit-and-run, and her ex-husband Noah (Dominic West) plead guilty to protect both her and his second wife Alison (Ruth Wilson) from suspicion. Season three will pick up three years after Noah’s confession and explore the consequences of all their destructive decisions.

The third season will also introduce a major new character: Juliette Le Gall, a mysterious new love interest for Noah played by French actress Irene Jacob. Film lovers best know Jacob for her films with director Krzysztof Kieslowski: “The Double Life of Veronique” (1991), for which she won Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival, and “Three Colors: Red” (1994), for which she was nominated for Best Actress at the BAFTAs.

“The Affair” is an award-winner too. It won Golden Globes for Best TV Drama Series and Best TV Drama Actress (Wilson) in 2014. Then last year Tierney won Best TV Supporting Actress at the Globes, followed by an Emmy nomination for Best Drama Supporting Actress. Now that we have a better idea of the extent of Helen’s culpability, it looks like Tierney will have another strong dramatic showcase in the upcoming awards cycle.
