Fox Searchlight has released the first official trailer for its hot new Oscar contender “The Birth of a Nation” (watch above). The film, due out October 7, tells the true story of Nat Turner, a literate slave and preacher who led a rebellion in 1831 Virginia.
Star Nate Parker also wrote, directed and produced this biopic that won both the Audience Award and Grand Jury Prize at the Sundance film festival. That was where the studio, an Oscar powerhouse, picked up distribution rights for a whopping $17.5 million.
Parker’s picture uses the same name as D.W. Griffith‘s controversial KKK propaganda movie that debuted 101 years ago. He admits that the title is ironic, but clearly by design. Also in the cast are Armie Hammer, Aja Naomi King, Gabrielle Union, Penelope Ann Miller, Jackie Earle Haley and Mark Boone Jr.
In light of the recent #OscarsSoWhite controversy, academy voters may be eager to embrace a film with diverse talent both on and off the screen.
