Last fall on NBC, the enchanting “The Wiz: Live” aired to critical and fan acclaim, following recent successes for the peacock net with “The Sound of Music” (2013) and “Peter Pan” (2014). Based on L. Frank Baum’s classic novel, “The Wiz” won the Tony for Best Musical in 1975 and was turned into a 1978 film. Will the voters behind the Emmy Awards curtain follow suit in rewarding this updated live TV version?
“The Wiz: Live” is competing as a Special Class program at the Emmys, a catch-all category celebrating events that don’t neatly fit in to the Best Variety Special or Best TV Movie races. The all-star cast includes Mary J. Blige, David Alan Grier, Ne-Yo and newcomer Shanice Williams as Dorothy. We chatted with all of these stars as well as the musical’s production designer earlier this season.
