On Thursday’s “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” Donald Trump (played by Fallon) stopped by the NBC program to sing a “fantastic” duet with special guest Barbra Streisand. “Listen up, Babs,” dictates a particularly orange-hued Trump. “Together we’re gonna make duets great again.” Watch their rendition of “Anything You Can Do” above.
The buzzed-about moment took place on the August 25 installment of this late-night staple. With the final round of Emmy Awards voting ending 10 pm PT on August 29, could this viral video help influence the vote of TV academy members who haven’t yet cast their ballots?
Sure, voters are supposed to be considering last season of “The Tonight Show,” but outside influences occasionally factor in — it’s just human nature. Remember back in 2011, when Melissa McCarthy won Best Comedy Actress at the Emmys for “Mike & Molly” just weeks after “Bridesmaids” topped the box office. In that case, voters were clearly influenced by her big screen breakthrough.
In this year’s Emmy race for Best Variety Talk Series, “The Tonight Show” faces off against first-timers “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” and “Late Late Show with James Corden” and returning programs “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” and “Real Time with Bill Maher.”
Luckily for Fallon, the past two programs to dominate this category — “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” and “The Colbert Report” — are both out of the running, so we’ll have a brand new winner this year. That’s why it’s so important for all of the nominees to put their best foot forward during the final voting phase, when things like a viral Trump/Streisand duet could help snag those few remaining votes.
