“Waitress” reaped four Tony Awards nominations, including a bid for Best Musical. Based on the hit 2007 indie film, this intimate tuner tells the story of Jenna Hunterson (Jessie Mueller), a waitress in an unhappy marriage who unexpectedly becomes pregnant from an affair. She seizes upon winning a pie contest as her way out.
Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Sara Bareilles earned a Tony Awards nomination for her haunting score. On Sunday’s Tony Awards telecast, she joined Mueller, who was nominated for Best Actress, for a medley of tunes from this charming musical. While Mueller may have lost this year, she prevailed two years ago for playing another talented tunesmith, Carole King, in “Beautiful.”
“Waitress” lost all four of its races. However, it was in good company as all but one of the new musicals in contention was blanked as “Hamilton” won a near-record 11 Tony Awards (“The Producers” took 12 in 2001). The only races “Hamilton” lost that it contended in were Best Actress — that went to Cynthia Erivo, star of “The Color Purple,” which also won Best Revival — and Scenic Design, which was won by David Rockwell for the revival of “She Loves Me.”
