With only 36 hours left until this year’s Tony Award nominations are announced, Gold Derby’s in-house Tony trio — Executive Editor Paul Sheehan, contributor Sam Eckmann and myself — have once again come together to debate the top eight categories.
In a year with theatrical conversation being dominated by juggernaut “Hamilton,” it would seem like the top tuner categories would be easy to zip through with a discussion of, as Sam joked, “what will lose to ‘Hamilton’.” We found a lot of question marks in those races, though, including whether “School or Rock” or “American Psycho” could break into the top category, whether five-time also-ran Danny Burstein (“Fiddler on the Roof”) could finally win his first Tony against Lin Manuel Miranda or Leslie Odom from “Hamilton“, and whether six-time Tony champ Audra McDonald (“Shuffle Along”) will be snubbed.
The races aren’t looking much clearer on the play side either. We all agree that the new play “The Humans” by Stephen Karam, the revival of Arthur Miller‘s “A View from the Bridge” and its lead actor Mark Strong all look like locks for nominations and potentially wins. However, there’s some uncertainty as to whether Jessica Lange will finally receive recognition for her work in a revival of Eugene O’Neill‘s “Long Day’s Journey into Night” for, as Sam reminds us, “Tonys haven’t really been kind to her.”
