CBS Films just released the first teaser trailer for “Patriots Day,” which gets a limited release on Dec. 21 ahead of a national roll-out on Jan. 13. This real-life drama is directed by Peter Berg (“Lone Survivor” and “Deepwater Horizon”) starring Oscar nominee Mark Wahlberg with support from a large ensemble cast that includes Oscar champ J.K. Simmons, Emmy winner John Goodman, Kevin Bacon and Michelle Monaghan. Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross were just confirmed to be scoring the film.
From an original screenplay written by Oscar nominee Matt Charman (“Bridge of Spies,” 2015), “Patriots Day” tells the story of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing and the ensuing manhunt led by Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis (Goodman). This TV star has been in the Oscar conversation for supporting roles in “The Artist” (2011), “Argo” (2012) and Inside Llewyn Davis (2013) and could finally make the final five this year for his role here or for his scene-stealing, buzzworthy role in “10 Cloverfield Lane.”
Joining Goodman in the hunt for a Supporting Actor nomination is recent Oscar winner Simmons (“Whiplash,” 2014), who also lends support in both “La La Land” and “The Accountant” this year, as Watertown Police Sergeant Jeffrey Pugliese and Bacon as FBI Special Agent Richard DesLauriers. Monaghan (Golden Globe nominated for “True Detective,” 2014) plays Carol Saunders, wife to Wahlberg’s lead character Boston P.D. Sergeant Tommy Saunders. Wahlberg is looking for his first Best Actor nomination with the academy after barely missing the cut there for “The Fighter” (2010) and following his Supporting Actor nomination for “The Departed” (2006).
Below-the-line “Patriots Day” features a new original score from Oscar winners Reznor and Ross (“The Social Network,” 2010) who, after missing the cut for their work on “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” (2011) and “Gone Girl” (2014), are seeking their second Oscar nomination. Berg’s film “Lone Survivor” (2013) notched two Oscar nominations in Sound Editing and Sound Mixing categories. Given the subject matter of “Patriots Day” it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the film’s sound department follow in those footsteps.
