“We wanted to make something that can hopefully help people because suicide should never be an option,” says Selena Gomez in a new featurette for the Netflix teen drama “13 Reasons Why,” which premiered its 13-episode first season on March 31. Gomez is an executive producer of the series, which is based on the 2007 novel of the same name by Jay Asher.
“13 Reasons” tells the story of Clay Jensen (Dylan Minnette), a high school wallflower who struggles emotionally after the suicide of the girl he loved, Hannah (Katherine Langford). But his world is thrown even more into chaos after he receives a set of audio cassettes in which Hannah explains why she ended her life and who was responsible — possibly including Clay himself.
“At the end of the day, we’re telling stories. We’re storytellers, and our job probably more than anything is to entertain,” says fellow executive producer Tom McCarthy, a recent Oscar winner for “Spotlight.” “But you get a piece of material like this that’s actually about something — you take that seriously, and you really hope the discussion begins and will continue.”
Adds lead actor Minnette about the incredible loss of suicide, “To not seek out help or to end it is tragic because who knows what you could have gone on to do? Just see the future and know that there is so much life ahead of you.”
