2017 Daytime Emmy snubs: Maurice Benard (‘GH’), Amelia Heinle (‘Y&R’), Mary Beth Evans (‘Days’) & more

The 2017 Daytime Emmy nominations were announced on Wednesday, March 22, on CBS’s “The Talk,” but while lots of daytime shows and stars have plenty to celebrate today, a few major contenders were left out. That even includes a couple of this year’s predicted winners.

Maurice Benard (“General Hospital”) missed out on a nomination for Best Actor even though he was our odds-on favorite to win the category. He has played mob boss Sonny Corinthos on the ABC soap continuously since 1993 and has earned seven nominations for his performance: one for Best Supporting Actor (1997) and six for Best Actor (1996, 2003-2004, 2006, 2011-2012). But he has only won once (2003).

Amelia Heinle (“The Young and the Restless”) was the favorite for Best Supporting Actress, but she also missed the cut. The actress has played Victoria Newman on the CBS serial for 12 years now, having assumed the role in 2005. It took her almost a decade to earn her first Emmy nomination for this performance, but it turned out to be worth the wait because she ended up winning this category twice in a row, in 2014 and 2015. So while she’s not nominated this year, she’s still technically undefeated.

Mary Beth Evans (“Days of Our Lives”) wasn’t among our predicted nominees for Best Actress, but her exclusion is still significant because she actually won that award last year in an upset victory. But don’t feel too bad for Evans: she has won four Emmys in the last two years and she’s in the running again for Best Actress in a Digital Drama, where she’s also the defending champ.

Another 2016 Emmy winner missed the cut this year: Obba Babatunde (“The Bold and the Beautiful”), who claimed Best Guest Performer last year and this year earned a promotion to the Best Supporting Actor contest. But he didn’t make the final five.
