Last year’s winner Charles is back again for the second year, while Klum and Gunn are hoping for a bookend trophy to their 2013 victory. Gone are the days of TV academy members ranking the contenders in order of preference. Now, they simply pick their favorite choices in a straight plurality vote. Let’s take a closer look at this year’s nominees:
Alec Baldwin is a two-time Emmy winner for “30 Rock” (2008 and 2009), but this is his first bid for hosting ABC’s reboot of the popular game show “Match Game.” Also in Baldwin’s favor is the fact that he’s nominated for playing Donald Trump on “Saturday Night Live” in the Best Comedy Supporting Actor race.
W. Kamau Bell is also nominated for producing CNN’s thought-provoking unstructured reality program “United Shades of America.” While the popular comedian has yet to win an Emmy, the serious nature of his program could help push him over the edge.
RuPaul Charles comes into this year’s race with a much more widely embraced show. “RuPaul’s Drag Race” had just two bids in 2016, but now it has eight, including its first ever bid for Best Reality Competition Program. Can Charles win back-to-back in this race?
Gordon Ramsay is a veteran TV chef best known for his tirades against grown-up participants in reality shows like “Kitchen Nightmares,” “Hell’s Kitchen” and “MasterChef.” He has spent nearly two decades on TV, but this is his first career Emmy nomination
Heidi Klum & Tim Gunn have been nominated as a hosting duo for “Project Runway” for the past five years, winning in 2013. The fact that their Lifetime reality TV show is once again nominated for Best Reality-Competition Program (its 13th nomination) doesn’t hurt.
Martha Stewart & Snoop Dogg are most definitely the wild cards in the race. While most voters likely haven’t seen VH1’s silly reality program, they could take the win based on name recognition alone. Even we’re dying to see Martha and Snoop up on that Emmy stage!
