The 2017 MTV Movie and TV Awards will spread the wealth when they’re presented on Sunday night, May 7, live at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, California. But the top winners will be “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” “Stranger Things” and “Logan.” That’s according to the predictions of hundreds of Gold Derby Users, along with our Editors, Top 24 Users who got the highest scores predicting last year’s MTV Movie Awards and the All-Star Top 24 who scored highest when you combine the last two years’ predictions.
“Rogue One” has two nominations — Movie of the Year and Best Hero (Felicity Jones) — and it will win them both according to our forecasts. The film would thus follow in the footsteps of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” which won Movie of the Year at last year’s event, and we’ve seen winning streaks for franchises before: “The Lord of the Rings” won the top prize for all three of its films from 2002 to 2004. Then “Twilight” won four in a row from 2009 to 2012.
“Logan” has three nominations. It’s forecast to lose Movie of the Year to “Rogue One,” but we think it’ll claim its other two prizes: Best Actor in a Movie (Hugh Jackman) and Best Duo (Jackman and Dafne Keen).
TV programs are included at these MTV Awards for the first time in their quarter-century history, and the inaugural winner of Show of the Year will be Netflix’s “Stranger Things,” which will also take Best Actor in a Show (Millie Bobby Brown).
Those are the only movies or shows tipped to win multiple prizes. Elsewhere, Will Arnett gets best odds to take Best Comedic Performance for “The Lego Batman Movie,” which would make him only the second voice-over performer to win that award, following Robin Williams for “Aladdin” in 1993. Jeffrey Dean Morgan will slay his rivals for Best Villain for his role in “The Walking Dead” as the homicidal, bat-wielding Negan.
This year’s primary Oscar rivals for Best Picture will both take home an award: “La La Land” is the favorite for Best Kiss (Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone), while “Moonlight” will be awarded Best American Story. And “La La Land” could also win another prize: Best Musical Moment for “City of Stars.” MTV only announced the nominees for Musical Moment this past week, along with the Trending Award.
