Oscars scorecard: ‘La La Land’ wins both PGA and ACE Eddies Awards

Breaking down the precursor awards — both nominations and winners — as well as the top Oscar nominations by categories gives us 35 key races that will determine the strongest contenders. Last year’s Best Picture champ, “Spotlight,” went into Oscar night with checkmarks in 21 boxes while its two closest rivals, “The Revenant” and “The Big Short,” outpaced it with 23 and 22 ticks respectively.

With this week’s announcement of the Oscar nominations as well as the winners of the PGA Awards and ACE Eddie Awards, we are now up to 27 of the 35 boxes being in play (as detailed below and indicated by italics). The clear favorite remains “La La Land,” which has ticks in a staggering 26 boxes thanks to nominations in all the key Oscar categories and wins with both the producers and film editors (to date, its only missed out on a SAG nomination for Best Film Ensemble).

The only other film to earn bids across all the top Oscar races was “Moonlight,” which now has 20 boxes ticked. Also sitting at 20 is “Manchester by the Sea,” which missed out on that crucial Best Film Editing nomination. While “Arrival” won the drama prize for cutting at the ACE Eddies, star Amy Adams was snubbed by the academy; it now has 16 checkmarks. And both “Hacksaw Ridge” and “Hell or High Water” continue to do better than originally expected, with 13 boxes filled in to date.
