After the 2018 Critics’ Choice TV nominations were announced on Wednesday, our editors (Marcus James Dixon and Daniel Montgomery) and contributors (Zach Laws and Amanda Spears) got together to debate our favorite surprises and the most egregious snubs. As a group, we’re so happy that people like Evan Peters (“American Horror Story: Cult”) and Caitriona Balfe (“Outlander”) were able to make it in, while we’re left scratching our heads wondering why “Twin Peaks” was skunked. Watch our video slugfest above.
Spears notices that there’s a “big overhaul for Best Comedy Actress” because Kate McKinnon (“Saturday Night Live”) and Julia Louis-Dreyfus (“Veep”) were both snubbed. She adds, “I love that somebody new is gonna win something, and that’ll be a fun change of pace.”
“Where the hell is ‘Twin Peaks’?” asks Laws. “By and large, personal feelings aside, this is one of the best-reviewed TV shows of the year. Looking at some of these nominees, not to put shame to any of them, it’s kind of surprising.”
Montgomery’s personal highlight is that “American Gods” was able to make it into Best Drama Series after being snubbed at the Emmys. “I’ve been banging the drum for that show all year and I’m really hoping that it does well at the Golden Globes,” he admits.
One of the major hot topics in our discussion was the fact that the Critics’ Choice Awards decided this year to eliminate the Guest Performer races. Dixon explains, “People like Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Alec Baldwin that have won these guest categories in the past won’t be winning again because they’ve completely dropped those races.”
