In the 2018 Oscar race for Best Actress, Gold Derby’s expert journalists and in-house editors are split on whether Frances McDormand (“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri”) or Sally Hawkins (“The Shape of Water”) will prevail. In our editors’ latest predictions video, Tom O’Neil, Paul Sheehan, Chris Beachum, Daniel Montgomery and Marcus James Dixon wage war over this hot Oscar race. Watch our video slugfest above or listen to the audio podcast below.
“We have two contenders who are out front this early in the race, which is a bit unusual,” begins O’Neil. “In previous past years we had Emma Stone, Brie Larson, Julianne More, people like that who were out front early and stayed there. This year it looks like we have a real race.”
Montgomery makes the case for Hawkins, detailing that “her film is likely a Best Picture nominee, a possible Best Picture winner, a possible Best Director nominee and winner for Guillermo Del Toro. She plays a mute character, so it’s a transformative role in that sense.”
Sheehan readily admits, “I’m predicting her to win as well. I think she’s got what I call the Richard Dreyfuss and Diane Keaton syndrome from way back when. When they won, they had a second film out. And Sally Hawkins has a wonderful little Canadian film called ‘Maudie’ where she does a physical transformation.”
“Right now I have Frances McDormand at number one,” confesses Dixon as he warns that Hawkins could fall victim to the sci-fi/fantasy bias.
And Beachum throws his hands up and says, “I keep changing every couple days. Let me just say, actresses are just killing it.”
