In our poll asking which first-timer should host the 2018 Oscars, Ricky Gervais‘ fans came out in full force. He earned a whopping 70% of the vote, compared to Kate McKinnon in second place at 8%. Rounding out the Top 6 choices, there is a tie at 4% between Louis C.K. and Tina Fey & Amy Poehler, and then another tie at 3% with Samantha Bee and Melissa McCarthy. Of these six picks, who do YOU think would be the best first-time Oscars host? Take our poll below to let us know. (Also see our returning host poll.)
Gervais received worldwide acclaim for his hosting stints at the Golden Globes in 2010-2012 and 2016, setting an acerbic tone that felt just right for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s annual gala of drunken acceptance speeches. We’d love to see how he would have handled Envelopegate at this year’s Oscars.
No one is having a better year than McKinnon, who is perhaps best known for her Emmy-winning Hillary Clinton impersonation on “Saturday Night Live.” McKinnon also had us laughing in the summer remake of “Ghostbusters” and as an Oscar presenter last week.
Fey & Poehler made America laugh for three years in a row as Golden Globes emcees (2013-2015), then they went on to co-host “SNL” where they won Emmys for Best Comedy Guest Actress. Our favorite female duo would surely be a welcome addition to the Oscars stage, but are they up for the hardest job in showbiz?
Even though Bee is the host of TBS’s rival late night talker “Full Frontal with Samantha Bee,” we have a feeling ABC might make an exception for her to host the Oscars. She’s on the rise within the industry thanks to her very public take-downs of President Donald Trump every week.
Rounding out the list, C.K. is comedian at the top of his game, and his dry humor would fit in nicely with former Oscar hosts like Seth MacFarlane and Jon Stewart.
And McCarthy, a past Oscar nominee for “Bridesmaids,” is a physical comedian like no other who would probably even break a few bones if it meant it’d get a laugh.
