2018 Oscars scorecard: ‘Dunkirk’ and Christopher Nolan win with Florida film critics

The Florida Film Critics Circle (FFCC) gave an early Christmas present to “Dunkirk,” naming it as as the best film of the year on Dec. 24. This is the first time that this Oscar frontrunner has won the Best Picture prize from the 23 regional critics groups heard from to date. This epic WWII drama also won Christopher Nolan his seventh Best Director award to date, breaking his tie with Guillermo del Toro (“The Shape of Water”).

Timothee Chalamet ( “Call Me by Your Name” ) won Best Actor again, expanding his lead over Oscar frontrunner Gary Oldman (“Darkest Hour”) by a margin of seven to five. Best Actress went to Margot Robbie (“I, Tonya”) who picked up her fourth win of the season. Among her Oscar rivals, Sally Hawkins (“The Shape of Water”) has 10 of these prizes, twice that of both Oscar frontrunner Frances McDormand (“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”) and Saoirse Ronan (“Lady Bird”).

Sam Rockwell (“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”) and Allison Janney (“I, Tonya”) took the supporting acting races but at six wins apiece overall, they remain far behind the Oscar frontrunners: Willem Dafoe (“The Florida Project”) , who is at 14, and Laurie Metcalf (“Lady Bird”) with 15 wins.

Last year, “La La Land” and “Moonlight” were tied at 14 wins apiece among the 33 major film critics groups. In 2015, Best Picture Oscar winner “Spotlight” was the clear favorite among the scribes, with “Mad Max: Fury Road” far back in second place. In 2014, “Boyhood” had twice as many wins as the showbiz-themed “Birdman,” which then proved to be the favorite of the industry. 2013’s Oscar champ “12 Years a Slave” held the edge among the critics although the guilds split between it, “American Hustle” and “Gravity.” And in 2013, critics darling “Argo” was able to overcome the snub of Ben Affleck by the directors branch of the academy to take the top Oscar.
